In June 2010, Reece was diagnosed with Fanconi Anemia – a form of congenital aplastic anemia. Fanconi Anemia is a rare inherited genetic condition. It leads to bone marrow failure, leukaemia and other forms of cancers.
It is now time for the transplant.
Early 2016 (February/March)
Date will be confirmed on successful funds provided by either Medical Aid or Patient
When Reece was diagnosed in 2010, the Medical Board that decides on bone marrow transplants were happy for Reece to wait as he had stable blood platelet counts.
Reece’s platelet counts have now dropped to a level needing a transplant.
Groote Schuur Hospital in the Western Cape specialize in bone marrow transplant and Reece will be under the care of Professor Novitsky.
His recovery process will be under the care of Dr. Hendricks at Red Cross.
There are 4 probable donors available. The Bone Marrow Directory is currently confirming a possible German donor.
The Process (In Short)
Without complication – Isolation care for up to 28 days.
During this time Reece will receive a stint inserted at his heart for all medication. Chemotherapy. Bone marrow transplant. Bone marrow graphing. After that, he will be released to be hospitalized at home (in Cape Town) for a period of 6 months, during which he will be treated weekly at the Red Cross Hospital. After that, he will be released to go home to Jeffreys Bay where the recovery will continue for another 6 months.
With complication – Many possible scenario’s all treated differently
There is currently a 4-part need.
In 2010 the cost’s were R350 000.
We are currently waiting on the new costs and should have confirmation within a few weeks.
Reece’s trustfund currently nearly on par with this figure.
2. Hospitalisatition & Transplant Procedure
The transplant has been submitted to Reece’s medical aid and we are awaiting confirmation on costs covered.
The transplant is R500 000 +
3. Unforseen Medical Costs
R50-100 000. These are costs accumulated in the recovery period that will not be covered by the medical aid.
4. Relocation to Cape Town for a minimum of 6 months.
A clean & comfortable home is needed for Reece to recover in as he will be mostly housebound for that time.
Roche & Vicky will be with him during the recovery time whilst Roche will be travelling regularly to Jeffreys Bay for work. Funds above medical costs will be allocated to these living costs.
